From advertisements to new bottles, Coca-Cola set an influential standard in America.
Coca-Cola fountains, no carbonation, and Coca-Cola syrup were all made by John Pemberton. Dr. John Pemberton, the man credited with developing the famous Coca-Cola syrup, used Kola nut extract in the Coca plant as two of his main components. Dr. Pemberton was a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia (Maupin, 2000). A pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia was the first place to serve Coca-Cola. The Coca-Cola Trademark Patent was officially granted on June 28th, 1887 (James, 2004). When Coke was first made it had no fizz to it. Now Coke is a fizzy drink. In 1886 ads for Coca-Cola would represent a Coca plant, meaning that there was cocaine in the soda (Witzel and Witzel, 2000). Curing pain and calming down resulted from taking "Coca Extract" (James, 2004). Before cocaine became illegal in 1914, there were medical uses in the coke (Palermo, 2013). Pemberton changed his old cocaine formula to a caffeine formula and for an alternate, he put sugar syrup in instead of the wine in 1905 (James, 2004). In 1929 Coke finally became cocaine free, and they improved the procedure of making the cocaine free coke (Palermo, 2013). When Coca-Cola was invented it had alcohol, until John Pemberton made a new drink and has no alcohol. Now instead of alcohol, there is caffeine (James, 2004). In 1929 the Coca-Cola Company finally took ecgonine alkaloid completely out of coca. Trying to gain more customers attention, Chandler came up with a new idea to make it more recognizable to his customers (Feloni, 2016). The shape of the Coke glass was created so people could tell what brand of Pop That would be if broken (Maupin, 2000). In the 1920's a new font for Coke's new logo was a special cursive font. The company chose this new logo so it will be different than the others (Feloni, 2017). One of Coke's popular ad campaign featured young adults holding hands across the world. The young people were singing, I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" in unison. This popular campaign was developed by the McKann Erickson Ad Agency during the 1960s (Witzel and Witzel, 2000). Barbara McNair was the first black to advertise for Coke in 1965. Robert Woodruff let Coke advertise blacks (Pendergrant, 2000). Recently Coca-Cola had a campaign with names printed on labels and the ads encouraged consumers to share a coke with a friend (Hepburn, 2017). To follow up with their share a Coke campaign, Coca-Cola is getting ready to launch their "Share a Coke With a Song" each bottle will contain a lyrical phrase from a popular song. Lyrics were chosen to highlight Coke's ideas of including others positive thinking and refreshment (Moye, 2016).
