Recommended: Reflection about heroism
A famous actor Christopher Reeve once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Being heroic does not always mean you’re special or well known. Since a hero shows determination, it drives them to help others and go beyond what’s expected of them. Heroes are people who go beyond expectations.
As humans, we tend to idolize people from all over the world for their remarkable qualities, bravery, actions, skills, leadership or ways of life. These people are often referred to as heroes, whether it is a leader, Superman, or a local community hero, they all share something in common, and it’s not a cape. What makes each of these people heroes? Their extraordinary character traits set them apart from their less noteworthy peers. While there is a myriad of traits that heroes possess, the most significant ones are their bravery, their willingness to ask for help, and their strength to always do what is honorable.
Heroes consider how their actions affect others, including how their injuries might affect others, knowing they have someone to live for, people that care about them
Ottis Elwood Toole was an American criminal, arsonist and serial killer who was convicted in 1983 for six counts of murder. Imprisoned at Florida State Prison and was sentenced to death but the sentence was commuted to life in prison. Ottis Toole died the age of 49 on September 15, 1996 before his death he admitted to several counts of rape, murder and even cannibalism. Due to an unstable childhood and agonizing upbringing formed an aggression in Toole early on which lead to many of his criminal activities. Committing his first murder at age 14.
Heros’ come in many shapes and forms. Tall, short, small, big, anyone can be a hero, they just have to put in the effort. Though anyone can be a good hero, a great hero is somebody who inspires others, makes a difference, and is selfless. First and foremost, a great hero must be someone who inspires others. Ida B. Wells is an example of a true hero.
Valor, honesty, selflessness, the will to persevere, and someone who is above all hatred are just a few overlooked and “more recent” qualities of what it takes to be a hero. Beyond Louis Zamperini’s reputation of a war hero, he comes home to embody the persona of an everyday hero. With his moving
American actor Christopher Reeve once quoted, "A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles" (Brainy Quote). Not only did he play a hero as Superman, he truly became one in his personal life. After becoming a quadriplegic Reeve became a spokesperson for people with spinal cord injuries. A hero is a person one admires because of the qualities and selfless actions they exemplify to overcome adversity and inspire others. Heroism is apparent in literature, history, and in our own life.
Debi Mazar is an actress who stated, “A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tried to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really, deeply cares.” Heroes are relevant to everyone, because at some point, everyone has had a hero. Sadly, today’s society degrades the meaning of the word “hero”. Heroes are an important aspect of life, but famous people are not always heroes.
Hero’s are everywhere in this world sometimes they're around you other times they are far away, but everyone has a different hero. When we see a hero most people look up to that person because they know that they have done something good for someone. A hero’s place in society can be all over the world due to their different senses, but most of them will know when something bad is going to happen or when they know that you will need their help to fight mankind. A hero is someone that you look up too because you know that they do the right thing.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
Hero “Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary (Geraid Way).” A person who walks beside you on the sidewalk or smiles at you when you pass by them could be the hero that saves you when danger is present. A hero is an ordinary person who has extraordinary traits of acting quickly in a difficult situation, being determined to help any citizen in need and always steps up to help even if it means possibly getting injured. Heroes are people who will respond without hesitation when danger is upon them.
Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.
Heroes put others before themselves and will do anything to ensure that thing’s safety. Many people have either risked their lives or have loss their lives due to trying to save others. An example of this would be the man in the red bandana or Welles Crowther. Crowther was working in the twin towers as planes were crashing into them. Crowther could have ran away from the other people when the planes hit, but he chose not to spare himself, but to save others and sacrifice his own life.
The Revolution of Heroism In modern times, people toss around the word hero, but the idea of heroism through the centuries has never perished. What is exactly as a hero? A hero is not someone that can fly or has super strength. A hero maybe someone who is fighting for their people, to someone that crushes fear, or to an average person that sacrifices themselfs for people in need. Overtime, the evolution of a hero has changed drastically.
Heroes are people who stand for what they believe in. A hero is someone who is selfless, thinks of others before themselves, and have made a significant impact in history. These individuals perform extraordinary deeds, and make sacrifices for the greater good. Most heroes believe that the world can always be changed for the better. A hero who changed the world is Muhammad Ali, Ali was a hero because he stood for peace, he gave to others while struggling with Parkinson's disease and was a legendary boxer who changed the game.
