Literature exist in everything we do from books to TV, Meyers opinion to force literature on young minds is a necessity in my eyes for knowledge itself exists through literature. Though I`m not fond of reading and writing there is much more to literature than meets the eye. The way people communicate on the web, through media and even in person is literature, as sad as I am I would have to say “literature broadens our perspectives on the world” (Meyer 19) through things like the news and internet. I think my views about literature itself has changed drastically because “Sometimes students mistakenly associate literature more with school than with life.” (Meyer 31) This is why most students don’t understand when asking “Does literature still have a place in the curriculum?”(Reist 26) because English is key to many prestigious careers like lawyers to even video game designers. This is why if I had to pick I would side Meyers arguments were stronger overall and he convinced me that literature still plays a huge role in today’s society and I think the study of literature will never die out. Although Reist did indicate he was “not calling for the abolition of the study of literature, nor for its watering down, nor am I suggesting it is irrelevant. I am suggesting greater choice. Perhaps one size does not fit all. Perhaps we could change the sticker system” which I think was fair but I asked myself how did literature evolve into what is it today?
