Phillip Perez was incensed when he walked in the small apartment. He made his presence known by slamming the door open with an immense strength fueled by drunken rage. He has received some upsetting news that is the cause of this inappropriate entrance on this late night. His girlfriend, Melanie Krizek is flirting with another man according to a friend he was with at the club earlier. His unreasonable response to this rumor is to loudly enter the small apartment and wake the two ladies occupying the home.
Physical violence and the trauma from it causes serious psychological effects in teens, just as abuse left Jews in the concentration camps scarred for life, as shown in Elie Wiesel’s book Night. Specifically, things such as rape and being beaten can lead to horrible consequences. It isn't always easy to notice emotional abuse because there are not any physical signs as there are in physical abuse. But, like physical abuse, hyperactivity, depression, and PTSD is seen, in emotional abuse. But there are other consequences of emotional abuse, as well. And even though it's hard to determine a direct cause and effect, of abuse, these are some of the most seen, consequences for children who have reported being emotional abuse. Some of these consequences include insecurities, suicidal behaviors, self-harm, distorted view of self, and impaired social development(Frederico 346).
There are four types of development, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social. Physical development is the growth of gross and fine motor, skills. Gross motor skills are walking, running, throwing, and crawling. Fine motor skills are writing, holding a fork, and using scissors. Physical development is also the easiest to see.
Psychological abuse is a common strategy used by abusers to control their victim. The victim feels vulnerable because the abuser has authority over their actions. They also dictate what they eat or where they stay. The victims have a lack of control in their lives, and this can create powerlessness.
Social work practitioners are involved and aware of all social justice issues in the world today. Domestic Violence is just one major social justice issue which has become more prominent in the world. According to Royal College of Nursing (2013), domestic violence is an incident involving controlling and violent behaviour between intimate partners and/or family members. It also involves physical and emotional abuse. A practitioner working in the field of domestic violence can apply different theories in order to present the best possible outcome for the service user.
A child who experiences trauma of domestic violence will hinder their emotional growth, hence the child will not develop and maintain a normal level of trust. A child that experiences domestic violence or is exposed to domestic violence can develop a fear of their environment, for they think that everyone will try to hurt them. They also do not trust anyone with their problems or issues, hence they will keep everything inside and this will affect their state of mind. An abused spouse may experience chronic psydiasmatic pain or pain due to diffuse trauma without visible evidence. This form of pain will have a very bad effect on the body.
Several theories declare the connection between child abuse and crime. One of the earliest theories was originated by Sigmund Freud in 1896. Freud 's Repressed Memories theory shows that abusive memories are indirectly stored in the victim 's subconscious. In other words, a subject blocks out painful or traumatic experiences. This could lead to hysteria, and other complications in adulthood (Richmond).
Emotional abuse is sometimes also known as psychological abuse, which is the continuing emotional violation of a person by another and can have a severe impact upon a person’s life. It can comprise intentionally trying to intimidate, scare, frighten or humiliate a person. Emotional abuse leaves the offender free to gain authority and control over someone through his behaviors, language and gestures, which with the passage of time reduce the person’s sense of self-worth, self-belief and confidence. Due to the fact that psychological abuse contains no physical torture and there are no visible physical signs, sometimes, it can be hard to identify it.
This captures the impact abuse can not only have on one physically but also mentally. There are many social repercussions that can occur due to abuse, but one of the most impactful issues is suicide and mental illness.
They also believe that their lives are priorities. People don’t realize that there are many types of abuse in relationships. The types of abuse are; emotional, physical, and economic. (Baran 2015) Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse in a relationship.
