In 2014, Tony Abbott and the liberal government announced compulsory participation in ‘Work for the Dole’ programs, specifically for jobseekers who wish to continue to benefit from dole payments. If you participate in the program, you receive an extra $20.80 a fortnight to assist with expenses such as transport. These programs are designed to benefit both individuals and the community. This program will help the participants gain experience and more funding, it will also save government spending in this area. Although the program has many benefits it also has many negatives such as a non- increase in the long term availability for jobs, the sufficient opportunity for skill development and more. The Working for the dole program is helping non-for-profit organisations and small businesses a chance to save money by providing volunteers and workers. This helps the organisations work easier and also give participants a chance to learn skills and become a better worker, all while being paid for by the government. The program also helps the government save money, due to the improved program the Australian government is saving an approximate $1.2 billion over 4 years. This money will mean more money can be spent in other budget areas or into paying off the countries debt. Individuals that participate in the program often face many difficulties such as the work load for students studying, for example students participating who are studying, looking for 40 jobs a week, trying to keep up a social life and working 25 hours a week have a hard time balancing the load. Many of these activities have to be done but also need to be balanced to be happy in your life. Individuals also work for the program for under $10 an hour and is below the minimum wage, this money means it is hard to pay expenses and for everyday items that people need to survive. The program also has negative impacts on parents who wish to be full time carers will have to give up time to care due to the hours they have to work.The Working for the dole program also has some negative effects on the community such as only a quarter of the participants obtain jobs after three months of leaving the program meaning more people will join the program and the government will have to spend more money on the program thus taking money away from other expenses such as hospital, police and education departments. Another negative aspect is the social stigma of people being on the dole. Although it is better to work for the dole than to just get dole payments.
