Article 2. The Future of Children posted this article from the 1999 journal Domestic Violence and Children. This article analyzes four research reviews about the effects that domestic abuse has on children when exposed to it. When one pictures the effects of domestic abuse we often think of the wife or partner, but when children are exposed to this violence it victimizes them as well. The research that was done in these reviews contrasted children in non-violent homes to children exposed to domestic violence and the aspects of their lives that were affected by violence. The article focuses on a spectrum of factors such as; internal behaviors, external behaviors, academics, and intellectual functioning.

Article 3. This article was published by the organization Prevent Child Abuse America in 1996, it analyzes the connections between domestic abuse and child abuse. According to Prevent Child Abuse America, “ even if children are witnesses to acts of violence and not the intended targets, they can be affected in the same way as children who are physically and sexually abused” (Prevent Child Abuse America, 1996). According to this article, domestic violence is often the catalyst for child abuse and neglect, “ since domestic violence is a pattern of behavior, not a single event, episodes may become more severe and more frequent over time, resulting in an increased likelihood that the children eventually become victims” (Prevent Child Abuse America, 1996). The most common way this can happen is when a child is present during an act of domestic abuse; seuxal, verbal, orp hispgtgtcal, and become targets by the abuser. This happens in young children especially because they do not have the means of getting away from the situation, and cannot physically defend themselves. Children can also be used as a tool by the abuser, often controlling the victim by threatening the child to get the victim to obey them. In this article, they state that the overlap of domestic abuse and child abuse is anywhere from 30 to 50 percent. For some women, their tipping off point for getting help is when the abuse transfers from her to the child, “some shelters report that the first reason many battered women give for fleeing the home is that the perpetrator was also attacking the children” (Prevent Child Abuse America, 1996). That is problematic because a child doesn’t have to be directly abused to be affected, they can just witness acts of abuse and develop emotional and behavioral issues.
