Purpose
The purpose of this review article is to analyze prior research conducted on children’s exposure to intimate partner violence. Many, many children have witnessed family violence at home. The article provides information, in regards to prior research conducted, on how intimate partner violence can affect child development. The article provides information on how child abuse correlates with violence, how parents are affected in their ability to be a parent, children’s impact, and different harms to being exposed to violence.

Many children have seen some sort of physical violence used against their mother. When a primary caregiver or parent has violence being used against them, the child is also at a higher risk of violence being used against them as well. Establishing attachment is important for children at such an early age, but when violence at home is occurring, establishing attachment may be disrupted. Having no attachment may lead to more future problems for the child and mother. Being exposed to violence at home can be detrimental to young children because of young children’s need for care and a security net from a parent or caregiver. Early instances of family violence at home has the potential to create an onset of problems for the rest of a child’s development. Different issues such as those related to cognitive development and social development may also arise as a result, because children may have problems in making friendships with other kids and maintaining a good behavior in a preschool setting. Children who are seeing violence at home are more at risk for social and physical health problems, along with cognitive development problems. Children and teenagers are at a higher risk for not performing as well in school along with being subject to bullying. Children in these age categories may also experience, or be at risk, for problems with being overweight or obese, along with being able to establish or maintain relationships.
