Abstract Authors Milaniak et al., conduct a study of people who were maltreated as children to see if it affected how they behaved later in life. The authors use three different types of violence, criminal violence, child abuse, and intimate partner violence, in their research. After reading the article, the reader is left with an understanding of whether or not there is a relationship between child abuse and neglect and violence perpetrated by adults.

Motivation for the experiment? The motivation for this experiment was to find out if maltreated children are more likely to be violent throughout their life. The three different types of violence used in this study were child abuse, intimate partner violence and criminal violence. “This is the first prospective examination of poly-violence perpetration with this dataset” (Milaniak et al., 2014, pp. 248).
2. Method of data collection? In order to collect the data needed, Milaniak et al., set up the experiment so that they could continue to follow the person being tested into adulthood. They then received official records of children who had been victims of abuse and neglect. Self reports were also used to have more than one source of information. Lastly, data was used from maltreated and nonmaltreated groups in their study (Milaniak et al., 2014).
3. Method of data analysis? Authors Milaniak et al., used logistic regression to find the relationship between childhood maltreatment and violence. Matched pairs weren’t used so they could get as many participants as possible. “To determine if child abuse predicted poly-violence, a Poisson regression analysis was conducted” (Milaniak et al., 2014, pp.

Results? It is discovered that people with history of abuse are perpetrators of violence in adulthood. People with histories of abuse and neglect are more likely to be arrested for all three types of violence. The victims of child abuse are also more likely to report the crime after it has been committed. They found that those with history of abuse and neglect were more likely to commit criminal violence than the other two. Those who were victims of child abuse and neglect were also more likely to perpetrate poly-violence (Milaniak et al., 2014).
5. Authors’ Interpretation? The authors found what they expected to find. Their studies matched what their research indicated, that victims of abuse and neglect are more likely to be perpetrators of violence in the future. The authors did however discover that not all victims are perpetrators of violence. Some, not all, also went through depression and anxiety among other things (Milaniak et al., 2014).
General Conclusion
• Children who are victims of child abuse and neglect are more likely to be perpetrators of violence later in life.
• Not all victims of child abuse and neglect are going to be bad people or perpetrate violence.
• There are different types of child abuse and each of them can affect the child in different
