So far in America, one of the leading crimes is child abuse. Many Americans are not aware of the long-term effect that child abuse causes. Situations that happen during the developing years can and do have a lasting effect on the victim. Being a toddler the up bringing is not always so bright and colorful as it’s said to be, traumatic events often occur without notice. Since children are not able to fight back they become vulnerable and easy targets. The children tend to adapt to the violence that accurse in the household and they believe that it is normal. There have been programs to help children not be afraid and let someone know what is really going on behind closed doors. Experiencing abuse at such a young age makes it difficult for the child to put in effort to excel in their schoolwork. Not does it affect the child getting abused, but the peers around them. The children will tend to cause disruption in the classroom to get attention from others, that they do not receive at home. Attention is one thing but on a more severe note, children that suffer from child abuse do not make it past childhood, leading to death. In Bexar County alone, in 2007 twenty-three children have died from child abuse and in 2006 17 died, that shows an increase in children lost from something preventable (Martinez, 2007). Due to these statistics, adults should be aware of child abuse and help stop the situation before it causes serious damage to an individual. Nearly half a million children have been victimize of child abuse before they have even reached kindergarten (Gootman, 1996), since then probably more. Schools have to be more aware of what goes on in their students life, if signs are shown during class time then the teacher should report the behavior. Not only do abusive children act up but also, some do tend to be really quiet in certain situations. If no one notices the damage caused within the child then the abuse grows and it becomes harder for the individual to open up about the problem being caused. The teacher are usually that ones that the child feels most safe around because they feel a stable support and have shown to help the children who experience child abuse and have a better way of handling
