Genetics is one crucial factor that influences aggressive and violent behavior. Additionally, environment plays a significant role as well. Research has indicated that High School students that are exposed to violence at an early age have an increasingly higher chance of being involved in violent acts, compared to High School students that have never been exposed to violence (Duetsch, 2017). Students who have been exposed to violence are also at greater risk for developing health-related issues in the long run (Fredland, 2016). School conduct issues is another negative outcome that can occur if the student had been exposed to violence. Many of these students drop out of High School due to an inability to focus or do well when it comes to learning (Washington, 2016). Lastly, students who have been exposed to violence at an early age exhibit later signs of health disorders such depression and anxiety. When students recall the traumatic events of domestic violence as a child, the thoughts being played over and over again could later affect their health (Washington, 2016). Many different types of violent experiences can lead to hidden physical alterations inside the child’s body and those alterations could likely have adverse effects on lifelong health. An experience of violence can lead to lasting physical, mental and emotional harm whether the child is a victim or a witness. Having an after school program designed for High School students would serve as an effective intervention intending to reduce effects of violence exposure and other traumas on students. The afterschool program would be for secondary and tertiary prevention. It would be specifically crucial for students who are at risk for violent acts. The purpose of the after-school program would be to promote competence, wellness, and to promote skills to address problems. High School is an important age where adolescents are finding their own identity according to Psychologist Erik Erikson. It is also an area where students are close to adult life and where they can make decisions that will have a significant impact in their life. Afterschool program will also provide a safe environment where students are not exposed to any violence.
