It has come to my attention that the ability to communicate effectively with different cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds is now necessary in order to function well with the new globalized, modern world. Therefore, I will be giving you all some insight as well as tips and solutions to better assimilate with others that may have few similarities with you. As DuPraw and Axner say, “No matter how well we understand each other, communication is hard.” (ND) You might think to yourself that communication is difficult due to one’s fears of it. Being judged, hurting others unintentionally, and even being completely misunderstood can be some of the many obstacles that you may or may not have already encountered in your lifetime. It is an important topic because it can lead to miscommunication. It is good to get to know and understand one another, but try to not be so forward. DuPraw and Axner state that, “When you are dealing with conflict, be mindful that people may differ in what they feel comfortable revealing.” (ND)
Another important piece of advice I would like you all to remember is to never let your own culture and traditions fade while tying to assimilate to another one. Alvino and Fantini state, “Generally, the more deeply one enters into a second language-culture, or ‘linguaculture’, the greater the effects on one’s native linguaculture…” (2005) Thus, changes initial perspectives of the world.
