On June 1st, 2017, the president of the United States, Donald Trump pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord. The Paris Climate Accord, or Paris Climate Agreement, is the United Nations’ agreement on plans to lower the production of CO2 emissions in order to decrease global warming. Withdrawing from the plan may increase the temperature rise by a whole 2°C, risking a more hostile world. Not only that, the U.S.’s excessive CO2 emissions will also cause sea levels to rise, resulting in more natural disasters. Lastly, if the production of these emissions continue, extreme weather conditions may occur, leading to uninhabitable environments. Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement will have disastrous effects on the environment worldwide. …show more content…
However, the small 2°C does matter because it falters a risk to the world.Without committing to the Paris Climate Accord, temperature may increase a whole 2°C, risking shortages in food and water worldwide (AP). Due to upset weather patterns, decrease in rainfall will cause droughts, which leads to a short supply of fresh water in many developing countries and will eventually start to affect developed countries (Bawden). On top of that, droughts and heat waves caused by global warming also hurt the production of major crops in parts of the world, such as wheat and corn. The UN warns that wheat yields may drop about 5 percent each degree increase. Since many people depend on consistent rain in order to attain and grow food, world hunger and famines could start to occur throughout the world as a result of droughts. Although the small increase in temperature may be unnoticeable in warmth, it will definitely be detected through natural disasters that will start to occur. In short, the U.S.’s withdrawal will lead to a more detrimental world, scarce of food and …show more content…
According to The New York Times, the U.S. is the biggest polluter, responsible for ⅓ of the excess carbon dioxide gas produced (Gillis, Popovich). The U.S. has adversely emitted 26% out of all global emissions worldwide in only 45 years, from 1960 - 2005 (Romm). With that being said, the other 182 countries involved with the agreement will have a far more difficult time trying to keep the climate increase under 2 degree Celsius, without the U.S.’s contribution. The AP reports that the U.S.’s decision to withdraw itself from the agreement can result in an additional 3 billion tons of carbon dioxide in the air each year. This increase is enough to melt glaciers and ice sheets worldwide, raising sea level which will result in destructive erosion, flooding, more powerful storms, water and agricultural soil contamination, and habitat loss for humans, fishes, birds, and plants (National Geographic). It may not seem as serious at the moment, but Donald Trump’s withdrawal will ultimately cause more damage than just higher sea
