This sculpture is a mixture of female and male traits; its idea is to describe the realism without mythical and big muscles as was found in the Hellenistic period. Donatello’s David shows realism more than it does an ideal condition of man as in the Greek Hellenistic period. There are a few ways to tell. First, David’s skinny body and his arrogant expression reveal a confident man and anon-mythical expression that would not have been made as artwork during the Hellenistic period.
On September 25th David was arrested for vandalizing property and for burglary. David’s case became so popular in North Carolina because during his trial the state did not provide him with a lawyer. When David appeared in court he was informed of all the charges against him. The court also showed the footage of the defendants house where someone had entered his house to destroy his property and to steal.
Therefore, Gianlorenzo Bernini intended to depict his statue of David as if he were in battle, so viewers felt the presence of the sculpture. As you analyze the two sculptures, you see the difference in symbolic meaning and the messages being portrayed. In the High Renaissance Era, the ideas of classical humanism were fully implemented within sculptures and paintings. Michelangelo soon created a god-like marble statue named David, of a human on the highest pedestal.
‘Seated Boxer’ shows a symbol of the artistic freedom in the Hellenistic period while Donatello’s ‘David’ shows the realism during the Italian Renaissance of the 15th century. The both statues were made out of bronze. David’s’ figure expresses a softer and less muscular shape compared to ‘Seated Boxer’ body is larger and very muscular to define athletic’s strength that is so mythical and not so real (Allen, 2014). ‘David’s’ body defines few differences of realistic expressions. Firstly, he wears his military helmet and military boots while standing in a relaxed way that likely looks a little bit feminine.
When another artist remakes the work of a former one it always gives a sense of admiration and gives another point of view on the topic. The two sculptures of David are both breath taking. However, Bernini and Michelangelo achieve this feeling in diverse ways. Bernini’s David gives the sense of a Baroque styled sculpture. Meaning that it expresses a grandiose image that portrays masculinity.
Donatello is a world renowned sculptor and artist that was born in Florence Italy in 1386 to a member of the Florentine Wool Combers Guild named Niccolo di Betto Bardi. With Donatello stacher as a son of a tradesman, he was able to be schooled at the home of a wealthy and influential Florentine family of bankers and art that are closely tied to the Medici family. Some of Donatello most famous works of statues are the bronze and marble David, Penitent Mary Magdalene, Saint George, and Equestrian Monument of Gattamelata. Donatello had a deep understanding of ornamentation and classic forms, that important knowledge would eventually change 15-century Italian art. Donatello is died on December 13, 1466 of natural causes.
People have told stories with marble, as well as ink. The focus of the Renaissance was the arts. Artists had evolved their skillsets since the Middle Ages, for example, their paintings weren’t 2D and they focused on people rather than just gods. The detail of sculptures and paintings became more realistic than it had been during the Middle Ages. In Michelangelo's sculpture David completed in 1504, he sculpted an image of David from David and Goliath holding a slingshot, before he kills the beast with a stone.
It wasn’t until an assignment in this Humanities course required an analysis of sculpture that I actually viewed sculpture contemplatively. I chose Michelangelo’s sculpture of David not only because it is a renowned carving from the Renaissance period, but because of the heroism that is represented in the various elements chiseled in the marble. David’s muscular physique, curved stance, enlarged right hand, and furrowed brow are indicative of faith, determination, and bravery. In the bible story, “David and Goliath”, David was a young boy who volunteered to fight the giant warrior Goliath. He used his sling shot, a stone, and his faith in God to defeat the mighty giant and become a hero to the Israelites which Michelangelo adeptly captured.
Christina Sposato Professor Jaime Haugh HUM 2235 20 October 2015 David and Goliath: Donatello vs. Michelangelo It is not unusual for two artists to depict the same picture, moment, or person in their works. Often times, it can be quite interesting to see the similarities and differences between them. An example of this is the sculpture of David, created by both Michelangelo and Donatello. Through studying both of these pieces, it is clear that Donatello’s David was historically correct, and that Michelangelo’s David was a beautiful masterpiece.
The statue was dedicated to the king of the god’s, Zeus. In the god’s right hand,he held the figure of Nike,{So that’s why the companies name is Nike!) and in the god’s left hand,he held an eagle headed scepture(kings rod) The statue was made out of a wooden core,Zeus’s robe and ornaments out of gold and the god’s skin out of ivory. If Zeus were to stand up,his head would litteraly go through the roof!
David is a topic from the Old Testament, which is widely repeated and done by many artists. David is a story where it shows that not only does strength wins in a battle but also wits. Each artist depicts David in different views and moments, like Michelangelo who is an Italian sculptor painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance, another is Gian Lorenzo Bernini who is an Italian architect and sculptor, and he was credited with creating the Baroque style of sculpture. Although both artists depicted David, but each one had different style where Bernini’s is more expressive then Michelangelo’s. Looking at both sculptures of David, there are some similarities which can be noticed.
Filled with faith and a passion for God’s name, David, unarmed, slew Goliath with a stone and a sling. Subsequently, he cut off Goliath’s head with the giant’s own sword, resulting in the triumph of Israel. This chronicle eventually led Florence to adopt David as their emblem, a bastion of Republican liberty. David’s strength, courage and vigorous confidence were the characteristics that Florence wanted to project and thus they
454 years ago, William Shakespeare was the star of society. Everyone wished they could string together words as well as he could. His plays were the hits of the town. But now, high-school students dread the Shakespeare unit, complaining that it is ‘useless to read some old guy ’s work’.
Donatello’s St. George was chosen as an influence for the posing of the figures because, like Michelangelo’s David, Donatello’s St. George is a figure associated with heroism and steadfastness in Florentine culture (“Donatello’s St. George”). Form Wise the St. George stands tall and ready with his body slightly turned and jutting out from its alcove. This gives him the appearance of being ready to strike at any time while still having a calm air about him. Taking these aspects and imbuing them to the statues for this memorial would help to add a strong sense of history and heroism to the monument.
Another reason for decorating Florence however, was so that the citizens could show their solidarity towards their community and give back to city which they so dearly loved. Such civic values not only inspired the citizens, but also the sculptors, especially Donatello, with his creation of David. He stood for Florence and her liberty. For triumph over tyranny. However, the fight was not over yet, as Florence would have to face off against tyranny once again in the next
