Doomsday Preppers is a reality TV show that showcases the different lives of people who class themselves as ‘Doomsday Preppers’, i.e. people who go to extreme lengths to prepare for doomsday. These ‘Preppers’ will do whatever they think is necessary to plan for their own personal interpretation of what the ‘end of days’ would be, no matter what the physical, financial or psychological cost on themselves or their families. Preppers ostracise themselves from the outside world preparing for doomsday situations that aren’t that serious or very unlikely to happen. One man has gone to extreme lengths to prepare for an EMP attack, including building an underground bunker out of shipping containers and training his 10-year-old son how to fire a sniper rifle. EMPs are a real threat, but the US government has taken steps to ensure that an EMP attack would not cripple their country. Another example would be a New York family who have taken obsessive steps to ensure that they would survive if the Yellowstone Volcano ever exploded. One man also prepares to perform a c-section on his pregnant wife in a non-sterilised barn without any prior medical knowledge or experience. Any mistake in the procedure would cause serious harm or death to the mother or child. Spontaneuos ‘doomsday drills’ where families abruptly fortify their house or drive out to the desert and hide in a bunker can be frightening for young children and interrupts the schedule of school-age youth in the family.
