Dorothy has to overcome different obstacles and has series of different tests that she must pass. She has left her home town Kansas after a powerful twister picked her house up and in which it landed in the Land of Oz crushing the Wicked Witch of the East. Every munchkin and Glinda the good witch all praise her, but now the sister the Wicked Witch of the West comes along and swears revenge upon Dorothy and her dog Toto. Trying to find her way make home she must follow the yellow brick road to Emerald City and talk to the Wizard.

Gulch is used as a metaphor in “The Wizard of Oz” to symbolize Miss Gulch’s extreme threat towards Dorothy throughout the movie. In the beginning of the movie, Miss Gulch is a villian towards Dorothy because she wants to take away Dorothy. After Dorothy arrived home, Miss Gulch came and showed Dorothy’s aunt and uncle her warrant to take away Toto and put him down. This makes Miss Gulch a threat to Dorothy because she wanted to take away one of the things that matters most to her.
The characters in the movie, “The Wizard of Oz” are character foils to Dorothy, as they share personalities with Dorothy. The Scarecrow requests for the wizard to give him a brain because he is not smart. In the movie, the scarecrow believes that he is not smart, giving him the idea that he does not have a brain. Dorothy can be viewed as not having a brain like the scarecrow because she does not think about her actions, showing that they share this trait. The Tin Man requests for the wizard to give him a heart, hoping that the wizard can.

In the Wizard of Oz the main character, Dorothy, makes some unlikely friends. Three of these friends accompany on her journey to see the wizard of Oz because they too, need something from him. The first of these three that Dorothy meets is a Scarecrow, who claims he is in need of a brain. Throughout the course of their journey however, the Scarecrow demonstrates many times that he indeed already happens to have one, without ever realizing it himself.
The Scarecrow’s real world counterpart are the farmers. While Dorothy and the Scarecrow are walking through the forest the yellow brick road was uneven and broken at times. Because the scarecrow had no brains he kept of falling over but, “it never hurt him, however, and Dorothy would pick him up and set him upon his feet again,” (Baum). This compares to the farmers in the real world. While many people thought that they were dumb (or that they had no brains), others believed that they were smart.
As the story of The Wizard of Oz plays out the character Dorothy goes through significant change, she is a dynamic character. Her heart turns from wanting to grateful as she matures into a young lady, which is important to this plot, because her journey of growing up impacts the entirety of the story and it impacts all of the characters she encounters along the way. The entire story begins with Dorothy frantically begging for the attention of her preoccupied aunt and uncle. Everything about her actions and words hint at self absorbent and immaturity. However there has been much dispute between these individuals as to whether or not Dorothy would classify as a heroine throughout the novel. Dorothy, by definition, is a heroine as she was admired and praised by her peers since the beginning of her journey. The actual question to be asked is if a person should be considered a hero or heroine without intentionally or truely presenting qualities or performing actions that would grant said status.
