The Similarities and Differences Between Double Dutch and Skateboarding After reading “Ready, Set, Jump!” by Allison Friedman and “Skateboarding Takes Off” by Alessandra Potenza, the reader can see the slight differences and similarities in both double Dutch and skateboarding. These sports are similar in how they are popular today, and who it was created by. On the other hand, they are also different in how they spread across the country and when it was created. Overall, the histories of double Dutch and skateboarding are similar and different in many ways. Double Dutch was spread across the country when two detectives saw two black girls playing it. The detectives called schools and made it a sport. When the fantastic four got first place and started in commercials, it spread across the country. The text states, “Walker and Ulysses Williams, along with Nikki Adams Howell, established a double Dutch league and created official rules for scoring. The two officers encouraged students to form teams and were judged on speed, footwork, and creativity. Howell was chosen for a team with three other girls, and they became known as the Fantastic Four.” (Friedman 18) This shows us how it has spread across the country. On the other hand, After the X Games skateboarding In 1995, the skateboard parks went from just a few hundred to several million. Children often made their own things by skateboarding. They attached the wheels of roller skates to the underside of a wooden board and mounted a wooden fruit bowl on top. The text states, “Less than a decade later the first X Games, there were some 2,000 skate parks in the U.S., up from just a few hundred in 1982.” (Poteza 21) This shows that skateboarding spread across the country because of the X Games. All in all, double Dutch and skateboarding were spread across the country by different people and sports
