On the fourth year of my life on the farm, I was at my peak. Running faster than ever, getting farther and farther from home and exploring. From the hours of 1-4pm I would find myself climbing fences and trees and often edging closer to the pond near the back pasture. I would fly through the thin air, feeling the wind sweep my long blonde hair off of my shoulders as I ran from tree to tree and pond to pond.Halting this almost heavenly experience, were dragonflies. They get in the way and are always found getting caught in hair. Most people do not have the experience of hearing dragonflies make their devilish buzz, and I would never wish it upon my worst enemy. All I could do in this moment was what had almost become habit. Remaining calm and understanding that the bug lashing around merely inches from my face was probably just as scared as I was. It is important that a zen state is reached in this process. Some things that I learned to help reach this state of mind included humming a favorite song, starring at the horizon, and possibly just pretending that the creature wasn’t actually there. It was often difficult to do this, mostly due to the fact that the bug was thrashing around for it’s dear life. This act mainly lasts 1-2 minutes as the pressure to dispose of the hair bug was quite high. After achieving a sense of calm, the most fun step followed. The technique, nonetheless, remained just as important. This step had 3 very simple parts that included: taking a deep breath and holding it, I would shut my eyes and shake my head until the bug fell out or until my neck hurt of minor whiplash. If the horrific dragonfly screams had stopped by the end of this step, I went along with my day. Unfortunately, it rarely seemed to work out this
