I read a book called Scat by Carl Hiaasen. In his book, there is a oil company called Red Diamond Energy Cooperation, or better known as RDEC. This company is run by a person named Drake McBride. This company was bought by his wealthy father, who stated that the “Red Diamond (was his) last act of charity.” Drake, being a worthless fool, decided that he would set up his oil drilling business in, Florida, since he owned a waterfront. His first act was to hire a retired Exon worker, JImmy Lee Baylis, who then becomes his product manager. While Jimmy Lee Baylis would handle everything, Drake would be surfing. Drake McBride cares solely about money. He shows a newspaper clipping to Jimmy Lee Bayliss, which features the Everglades, and how there is a lot of oil. …show more content…

He buys a plot called Section 21. Drake McBride comes up with a plan, to drill the oil from the Everglades. Since the Florida government, cares deeply about its ecosystem, it could buy RDCE's drilling rights, and Drake would end up with a lot of money. But after reaching the conclusion that Section 21 has barely any oil, Drake has to go to desperate measures. Illegal drilling. SInce the section near Section 21, Section 22, has a lot of oil, Drake McBride decides to illegally drill. From up above, the large cypress trees cover the equipment, but if a hiker were to stumble through, Jimmy Lee Bayliss and Drake McBride would be sharing a jail cell together. When a group of kids on a field trip, come to a swamp near the drilling site, Bayliss has to prevent them from discovering the truth. He starts a fire, and makes it look like a wildfire. The students then leave, but not before one of the teachers has to go back, to get someone’s medication. Later the teacher goes missing. One day, Bayliss comes to Section 21, and is surprised to see a fire investigator truck.
