Dramatic irony has an important role in the tragedy - Romeo and Juliet. It means audiences know something but people on the stage doesn’t and the audiences can not do anything about it. However, it makes the tragedy more suspense although it foreshadows something is not good will happen. In this tragedy, Capulet – Juliet’s father is a major character that dramatic irony affects this character the most throughout all the play. “Sir Paris, I will make a desperate tender of my child’s love” (Shakespeare, III, iii 13-14). Due to Tybalt’s death, Capulet thought that his daughter was depressed because of Tybalt - her cousin was dead, who she loved so much. No words are strong enough to describe her feeling. Nevertheless, what did Capulet – her father saw she was sad because of Tybalt’s. This shows her father didn’t take care of her, he actually didn’t understand his daughter. Romeo was her first love who she loved so much and now he wanted her to marry a person she didn’t have any feeling about him. Although Capulet wanted to protect his girl by marrying Paris, to make her happy after Tybalt’s death, it made the play turned into a sad ending. His role was significant because he was one of the most reason caused Romeo, Juliet, and Paris to the death. His decision, his actions including destiny of three people. However, he chose to make a marriage for Juliet and Paris. Because of his decision which forced Juliet to marry Paris, she became disobedient to her father which she has never done before. Then another dramatic irony appeared when she asked her father to forgive her and said that she would marry Paris, “Pardon, I beseech you. Henceforward I am ever ruled by you” (III, ii, 22 – 23). This words she said to her father just to hide her thought and her plan which made her be happy even though she would be misbehaved to her father. On the other side, readers know that she already married Romeo which she could not marry to Paris. But Capulet didn’t realize that she was Romeo’s wife then he made the wedding happened, this thing that Capulet didn’t know make everything had worked out of the plan. Then for Juliet to make an escape plan with her Juliet. This dramatic irony is important to the play because it foreshadows that things will go wrong, from happy to sad based on the marriage that Capulet made. No one wants to marry a person that he or she doesn’t love, same as Juliet although she knew that it was good for her but her heart controlled everything and she accepted to take a risk. If he knows that Juliet already married to Romeo, at least he won’t force Juliet to marry again then she
