The Tragic Love Story of the Betrothed

The novel made by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet encompasses the complexities and difficulties that love can make. Two noble families– the Montagues and the Capulets– are enmeshed in a feud. Both the protagonists are born into the wrong families; Juliet born as a Capulet, and Romeo born as a Montague. As these two collide at an event, falling in love. This solely created a collision of issues by the influence of the families. The couple does their best to shrive through all of the family obstacles so they can ultimately be together. Romeo and Juliet were both fighting for each other. However, their complexities and difficulties were not just caused by themselves, but by those people around them. Others are to condemn as well, due to their actions, these two were unable to have their happily ever after that they were yearning to achieve leading to their downfall. The four characters that are most accountable for the tragedy of the love story between Romeo and Juliet are Lord Capulet, Friar Lawrence, and the star-crossed lovers - Juliet and Romeo, themselves.

To begin, Lord Capulet is portrayed as a huge component to the complexities and difficulties that Romeo and Juliet have to face. One of the biggest issues was when Lord Capulet was forcing his daughter, Juliet to marry Paris. He put them through so much just because he was inconsiderate of his daughter’s feelings and opinions. No matter how Juliet protested marrying Paris, Lord Capulet did not care and continued to pursue plans that suited his own needs. Juliet finds out about the shocking news about her marriage and says, “I pray you, tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet. And when I do, I swear It shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, Rather than Paris. These are news indeed!” (3.5.120).

The first explanation why Friar Lawrence took a huge portion of the blame is because he irrationally married these two naive, inexperienced young couples. As their parents would condemn their relationship, they were in need of an adult’s advice, which led them to turn to Friar Lawrence. It could have directed them into a much better approach but instead went ahead and married them predicting that the marriage would end the feud between the families, however if he contemplated just a little bit, he would have been in realization that this marriage was extremely risky and dangerous for these star-crossed lovers. “But come, young waverer, come, go with me, In one respect I'll thy assistant be, For this alliance may so happy prove To turn your households' rancor to pure love” (2.3.90). Clearly, he was in the determination of ending the family feuds and carelessly acted on the behalf of that. A huge game changer in the series of events of this couple was when Friar Lawrence had put the idea of faking Juliet’s death into Juliet’s mind. As Juliet was put in a horrible position after her father’s ultimatum, she had two choices, one to marry Paris, and the second one was to get disowned by Lord Capulet.
