Doping is not so Dope

The use of drugs to enhance performance is not only illegal, but looked down upon by crowds all over the world. Steroids have been banned from the Olympics and other sports for decades with an extremely harsh punishment in return. History shows that the strict rules enforced have proved to decrease the drug intake amount further and continues to influence athletes. They may strengthen your ability to do something, but there are severe side effects that come with this artificial method of improvement. Her distinguished career was forgotten and nobody would hear about her great accomplishments ever again. After such harsh punishments, drugs seem to have ruined their lives and end up not benefitting anyone in the end. The risk an athlete takes by using drugs is not worth the shame that they can receive in return which is why drug testing continues to be the smart decision.

Another argument that is heard often is that drug testing violates an athletes basic rights. The Fourth and Fifth Amendments prove that they have right to be seen as innocent until proven guilty and do not support unreasonable searches (Jacobs, Newton). This is a valid argument in the case of public citizens but not when dealing with professional athletes. They agree to be apart of a team which means that they have to play by the rules of the game. Signing a contract to compete in a sport is giving up your right to the Fourth and Fifth Amendments which athletes know in advance. They are not the only ones who are drug tested, everyone is treated the same way which keeps the game at an equal battle. Some say that athlete are unfairly singled out as a group. When people go professional, they single themselves out by getting out there and competing to win (Jacobs, Newton). They all know what they get into when they do which is why there is no reason to stop drug testing in the world of professional
