Two of the subjects, Carolyn and Craig, had different personalities. Carolyn is patient, which allowed her to wait. On the other hand, Craig is impatient, which caused him to start taking all the toys and break into the the desk because he figured there would be additional toys. As a result of Carolyn being patient, she attended Stanford as an undergraduate, and got her Phd in social psychology at Princeton. She is now an associate psychology professor at the University of Puget Sound. Meanwhile, Craig as a result of being impatient has moved to Los Angeles and has spent his career doing “all kinds of things” and in the entertainment industry, mostly in production. He is currently helping to write and produce a film.

Metacognition helps people overcome their impulses by thinking about thinking and allows people to outsmart their shortcomings. Covering your eyes, pretending to play hide-and-seek, playing with your hair, etc. helps you control your attention and thoughts because you avoid thinking about the marshmallow.
The variables that cannot be controlled in a “Marshmallow Experiment” are raw intelligence because it is at the mercy of self-control. Even the smartest kids still need to do their homework. Second, is personality because it cannot be reliably assessed at all. It is like attempting to separate nature and nurture. Third, is doing the marshmallow tests on adults because their will be more people who refuse to touch the marshmallow which will give inconclusive
