In the film The Family Stone it portrays a family that comes together for Christmas. The family is open with one another in all aspects of their lives including intimate information. One of the sons (Everett) brings his girlfriend (Meredith) home for the holidays with the intention of asking her to marry him. Although there is one little problem, Meredith is an uptight people pleaser who is completely opposite of how this family functions, in the process of trying to please everyone and make a good impression causes nothing but chaos within the family system. Throughout, the film the family experiences an entire gamut of emotions, and each family member has their individual role within the system.
As the family comes together it is clear that (Sybil) the mother is head of the household that everyone answers to, and the one that holds the family together as it is. Although there is dysfunction, what holds this …show more content…

Amy had met Meredith once before while visiting them in New York. There was already a conflicting relationship between Meredith and Amy, since Meredith is making her first impression on the family Amy’s influence on the family had already painted the picture of her. Upon arrival Kelly (Everett’s Father) goes outside to greet them as they arrive and attempts to hug Meredith and she withdraws and offers to shake his hand. To increase the tension between Meredith and Amy, as Everett and Meredith are taking things to their room Meredith refuses to sleep in the same room with Everett in his parents’ home.
