Dyslexia Dyslexia is a common and growing “learning disorder”. Comprehension, social skills, and memory are just some of the things that are affected by having dyslexia. Reading or seeing words “backwards” is not part of having dyslexia; I would know. I was diagnosed with dyslexia when I was in the second grade. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability in America. Over 40 million American Adults are dyslexic, and only 2 million know that they have it. There is no cure for dyslexia. Sometimes parents get their children help because they are struggling with reading and after a few months, they catch up and sometimes the problem will disappear. Dyslexia isn’t like that. Someone who has dyslexia worries about what other people think of them when they read out loud or when they don’t understand and have to ask for help. There are several at home strategies that can help you or your child overcome dyslexia. Providing an organized and clean working space can help with studying. Another way to help overcome dyslexia is to read everything you can. If you go out and eat, reading the menu out loud can have an effect over time. The little things in life can have a great effect on a dyslexic. Objects such as; pencil grips, color organized, a wristwatch, a spell checker, books on tape, and a personal cell phone can make a difference when it comes to being dyslexic. Dyslexics tend to have messy handwriting and while writing they will usually hold the pencil in a fist position. Using a pencil grip will help them with holding the pencil and can help correct the sloppy handwriting. A colored organizer can and will help them stay organized and help them find things easier. Dyslexics have trouble remembering left from right. Wearing a wristwatch on a certain hand can help a dyslexic remember which direction is which. Dyslexics have trouble with spelling even if it’s just a simple word. Spell checker will put a red line under a word that has an error in it. Spell checker helps dyslexics understand that they have made an error. Dyslexia often affects peoples reading ability, they tend to read very slowly and will skip words if they don’t understand how to say them. Having books on tape and following along will help you understand and comprehend what is being read to you. Almost everyone has a cell phone. Dyslexics rely heavily on their phones. They avoid writing long e-mails by talking on the phone instead so they don’t have to worry about making a spelling error. Now-a-days cell phones have an application where you can talk to the phone and it will type everything out for you. Being dyslexic, I always
