Fairytales and writings about a dystopian world have been popular for a long time, but putting the two together is quite a recent phenomena. The reason for its popularity could be that fairy tales in a modern context are easier to relate to for today’s generation. Also, as the target audience of these is usually teenagers and young adults, the dystopian setting could serve as a warning for them. Behind the exciting and adventurous story, there is usually a deeper meaning, as the authors of dystopian fiction reflect on the problems of our generation, and how it could destroy our world if we do not change anything.
One of today’s dystopian fairytales is called Cinder. It is a remake of classic Cinderella fairytale, and here the main character is a cyborg. Everyone adores him. This is why I felt like fairytale works in a dystopian context: because love (and lust) is always relatable, and it is the same with betrayal. We are still shocked by the cruelty of the stepmother, just like in the original story. People enjoyed Cinderella since the 1600s, and despite being put into a different context, it still did not lose its values.
Other fairy tale elements include the car, which is pumpkin-colored. It seems like Cinder does not need a fairy grandmother to fulfill her wishes: she makes a “carriage” for herself. And there is a festival as well, where our heroine is not allowed to go. The ball is an iconic part of the original Cinderella tale, as she arrives there dressed beautifully, like a princess. And in Cinder, she arrives there in greasy clothes, and then she loses her cyborg-leg, not her pretty shoes. It is a big twist from the original text that she never acts like a princess, never really cares about girly
