This article written by Joe Nocera is a highly controversial topic within teens and young adults. The use of e-cigarettes has been scrutinized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a new found addiction. The CDC believes that e-cigarettes are just as dangerous as normal cigarettes and are a detriment to the public health. Throughout the paper, Nocera is illustrating to the reader that he is very one sided with his opinion. Necura believe that e-cigarettes are not harming the youth but acting as a diversion to smoking combustible cigarettes.
As I read this article, and continued my research on this topic, I have come to a decision. I disagree with the argument the electronic cigarettes will lead to the addictive use of traditional cigarettes. As more and more people purchase and use these electronic cigarettes, they become addicted to the artificial flavors of the e-juice and the nicotine, not the idea of traditional cigarettes. The multiple different flavors draw their attention, the nicotine is just the one thing they don’t pay as much attention to. They continue making new flavors that grab the attention of teens and young adults which is the reason more and more teens and young adults begin “smoking” electronic cigarettes.
Second hand smoking could also be a future danger with these as well as they were with regular cigarettes. Even though they may seem less dangerous, they still contain one of the most addictive parts of a cigarette, which is nicotine, and it will keep the user coming back to it. If the cartridges of juice that go in the e-cigarette comes in contact with skin or if it is ingested, then their are high chances of getting nicotine poisoning because of direct contact with the chemical. E-cigarettes also have been made with sweet or fruity flavors, and these kinds of things can entice young people to try e-cigarettes. These brought in so many young people that they needed to be heavily regulated.
When thirteen hundred people die from a single cause every day in the United States, there needs to be something drastic done. Cigarettes along with second hand smoke kills more than five-hundred and 20 thousand deaths per year in the United States; something needs to change. As technology advances and the medical science field expands, technology can be used to improve almost every quality of life, but who would’ve thought that it could be applied to a billion dollar industry that has been static for the past two decades. Using modern technology, a new smoking apparatus has been popularized all over the world; electronic cigarettes. These new devices have grown more rapidly than many could anticipate.
Purchasing an e-cigarette has become insanely easy for teens, with nearly 90 percent of the e-cigarette vendors failing to verify the ages of the people purchasing
The e-cigarette was first invented in 2003 in Beijing, China by a man named Hon Lik, he is a 52 year old pharmacist, inventor and smoker. He got the idea of the electronic cigarette after his father whom was a heavy smoker, past-away from lung cancer .An e-cigarette is an electronic smoking device that is a battery- powered vaporizer which has a similar feel to tobacco smoking. This type of cigarette does not contain tobacco but has nicotine which is addictive from tobacco plants. The electronic cigarette does not produce smoke like a normal cigarette but produce vapour.
Imagine waking up one day to find out there are only 3 more years left to live. The life of a smoker is filled with danger and fear. The fear of not being able to stop and not being able to move on. The moment someone around the world picks up a cigarette, they are guaranteeing themselves deadly health issues. Over half of the population in the United States suffers in several ways due to this deadly act.
The users, therefore, supplement it with the traditional tobacco cigarettes whenever they cannot afford it (Carr, 2014). In fact, the companies producing the e-cigarettes apply expensive and advanced technology in making such products available to the users, it is therefore natural that the products become more expensive as compared to the traditional tobacco cigarettes, though more preferable (American Lung Association, n.d.). In most cases, the youths, who have become the highest growing number of e-cigarettes users find it hard to afford the product every time they need them, they end up using more of the traditional tobacco
Some articles try to convince the readers that the smoke is considered a hazard to people’s health. The public should be informed about the use of e-cigarettes because more individuals have started using it. Electronic cigarettes have gained exponential popularity over the years. The issue has been raised in various jurisdictions with conflicting existing laws that influence their legality. Globally, regulating bodies are debating on how heavily to regulate electronic cigarettes.
E-cigs are rapidly growing in popularity. Over 21% of the 18-24 year old demographic had used an e-cig in 2013. All other age groups showed increases in use as well, making this a product in its growth stage of development. As expected of a growing product line, e-cigs are being aggressively promoted. The differences in regulation domestically on advertising mean that e-cigs can be marketed in print advertising.

Furthermore, the effects of e-cigarettes have resulted in hospital admissions and the need for rehabilitation facilities, whether long-term or short-term, depending on the drug’s affect on the body. Also, e-cigarettes affect the brains of young consumers because of how their minds are still developing, and it would only reduce further growth. In short, e-cigarettes need to be taken into consideration before more health problems are added.
E-cigarettes were originally created as an alternative to smoking. America has dealt with tobacco addiction for decades before the tobacco industry’s eventual decline. However, there is a new issue that has become increasingly common recently. Teen vaping is a serious issue that should be addressed immediately. Since its creation in 2007, e-cigarettes have only grown in popularity, especially with teenagers.
They look happy to be holding a cigarette, or cigar. This positive influence causes many people to want to start smoking. New commercials have come out about the way in which to smoke more efficiently. Vaporizers and E-cigarettes interest teens more and more, because of the fun, fruity flavors, and compelling smoke that they make. The amount of advertisement in this world today, also encourages smokers to get their friends involved as
Electronic cigarettes were first introduced into the tobacco market in 2003. However, in the last few years, electronic cigarettes have been trending, especially among high school students. According to the Surgeon General study, “In 2015, 1 in 6 high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the last month”. The promotion and production of electronic cigarettes is an issue that must be addressed because they are attracting minors who may have never been addicted to nicotine prior to the introduction of e-cigarettes in the market. Companies have branded e-cigarettes as a ‘safer’ alternative to regular cigarettes, however, it is quite possible that consumers, more specifically the youth, are not well informed of the ingredients in them.
According to The Washington Post just in one year from 2013-2014, the numbers of school students using e-cigarettes is tripled and it’s gone up 800 percent since 2011.Contrary to that This is because it is often portrayed as harmless and it is being sold in such kid-friendly options as coca-cola, candy, strawberry and many other flavors. This has raised fears in society as it is been decade, we tried to combating and decreasing the numbers of smokers (Dennis). Also, a research found that teenagers who used this device are 3 times more likely to smoke regular cigarettes compared to those who had never use this device as a lot of parents are fine with their children using this device and they are not aware of the danger of it (Spencer). Moreover, there is more report that children drinking the e-cigarette juice and become horribly ill. For example a case in New York where a toddler died after ingesting liquid nicotine intended for use in an e-cigarette as many parents unaware of the safety risks to children from unsafe storage of e-liquid.
