I’ve made my fair share of mistakes during my youth. Using the oven to hide my roommate’s birthday gift was a big mistake. Bleaching my hair blonde turned out to be an even bigger mistake. My biggest oversight, however, was taking so long to realize that my true passion in life is computer science. I was raised in a low-income household. My family could barely afford gym shoes, so a computer was out of the question. Many in my family consider my educational goal to be a fantasy, nevertheless I remain determined to be the first in my family to earn a college degree. I began my pursuit of higher education in 2002, despite my family’s disapproval. Since my parents were never able to attend college, they found it difficult to understand its value. Unfortunately, my journey ended abruptly when I was diagnosed with a rare and incurable neurological disease that left me disabled. With great persistence, I transformed this curse into a blessing by utilizing the downtime during my long and arduous convalescence to realize my aptitude for technology. Although developing an E-Portfolio is a graduation requirement, I see it as an opportunity to empower every student with the capacity to substantiate not only the knowledge they have gained, but also their ability to apply it. Considering the success-driven society we live in, such a tool could prove invaluable if shared with a prospective employer or the admissions department of a competitive university. E-Portfolio is an exemplary way for students to assemble and reflect upon their skills as well as authenticate those in a thoughtful manner. Transcripts and resumes describe what a student has done, but an E-Portfolio shows that they’ve done it
