Since I come to the US and begin my study at Whitfield, I learn how to identify myself in a multicultural environment like the US. Coming to the US, I have interacted with many of the
Asians, who are both partly and fully assimilated. As conversing with them, I have a better reflection upon myself. I want to be more mature to keep my traditions and culture with me, but also to be more open-minded and flexible to voice my opinions. Specifically, the ELL class offers a great environment for me to be more goal-oriented in terms of defining myself.

She helps me recognize political, social, and economic aspects that the author mentions, such as the history of Chinese immigrants, the “New Jews”, etc. She also encourages me to have my own opinion, supported by strong explanations in the discussion.
Throughout the two semesters, I am really fortunate to practice my critical thinking and self- reflecting skills in the ELL class. And these two skills help me construct my thinking in a logical order. Besides academic skills, as a foreign student in Whitfield School, I learn a lot of cultural sustainability in this classroom. Although I have class with the other Americans, I feel comfortable being an Asian. That comfortability also nurtures a lot in the ELL class. Ms. Bell does not only bring confidence to me, but also reminds me of taking pride in my Vietnamese identity. For instance, the journal entry assignments in this semester mostly focuses on how I view the society as a Vietnamese. Every time I approach this type of assignment, I always think which feelings and thoughts I should have in order to reveal my Vietnamese characteristics.
