Another statement in the article says, “For most of the 1900’s, women were told sports were just for men.” This explains one reason why women couldn’t play any sports.

In the early nineteenth century, Victorian assumptions about women and their abilities were still alive and raging within the mainstream American society. One Victorian assumption would be through emotions, or a woman’s manner of expression, which was more apparent than a man’s own show of emotion. These minor differences on “manner of expression” between the two genders allowed even more damaging assumptions and stereotypes to flourish and stay relevant within the society. For many citizens, there was a question if females could gain characteristics such as loyalty, cooperation, and emotional control when playing sports. Women’s sports were just beginning in many universities and colleges, however, the female teams could only compete against other female teams from the same college or join an intramural team.
Ever since its debut by gym teacher Dr. James Naismith in 1891 basketball has become a widely popularized team sport for both men and women across the nation. Though enjoyed by both men and women, women have struggled to attain the same respect in the sport as men, even though the women at the University of California had their first extramural game in 1892. Vanner 1 Abstract This research study will explain why the NBA and WNBA commissioner should combine both leagues. This topic is important because female basketball players possess and show the same skill as male basketball players but, does not get the same respect as the NBA players. The hypothesis of this study will be that the WNBA commissioner will realize the WNBA is not going to be as global as the NBA and will try to do something to help get the WNBA players the money and respect women deserve. The qualitative method will be used in this research study to show why these leagues should be combined.
