Early Life: David Ray was raised by his grandfather but still visited and saw his father. David was physically abused by his father as a child. In school he was teased and bullied because he was socially awkward around others but mostly girls. The feelings for torture and rape started when david was a teen around the same time he got involved with alcohol and drugs. It's believed his acts of crime started up when he was a teen as well. David would graduate high school and became an auto mechanic in the U.S.army. After an honorable discharge, david would go to work for the state as an mechanic.

The idea that an entire family, husband wife and child, could be involved in kidnapping and torturing innocent victims for the pure sadistic pleasure of causing torment was beyond shocking. Since David and his family were well known where they lived in Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico no one would ever expect them to commit such a crime. This made the whole country question who they associated themselves with. Were they able to trust past acquaintances? Would their kids be allowed at sleepovers with others children? A man had raped and killed dozens of women and wasn’t caught until he made a mistake which allowed the girl to escape. Citizens were up in arms with the police. How can a competent police force allow this to happen? How could they not have caught on sooner? People in the town were not very trusting towards one another as they felt as if they couldn’t trust anyone. Some people in the town demanded change within the city government. What else did the city not know about?
