“Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night” (Poe). Edgar was born on January 19, 1809, and died October 7, 1849. He lived only forty years, but during his brief lifetime, he made a permanent place for himself in American literature and also in world literature. Edgar’s father abandoned him and his family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. This made him an orphan, he was then taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia. Edgar was not formally adopted by the family, but stayed with them well into his young adult years. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester, but left because of lack of money. Edgar later joined the army where his writing career began. Edgar Allan Poe was in the Romanticism literary movement. This era started in the 1800’s, and it’s about nature, spiritual expression, and self reliance. Edgar Allan Poe being an orphan changed his life from a happy to a depressed life.
