Edgar Allen Poe, born on January 19, 1809, in Boston Massachusetts, was a master of writing, editing, poet, and critic who captured millions of people with his powerful figurative language. Edgar Allen Poe managed to write several literary classics that still to this day surpass many common writers. He excelled in his classes at the University of Virginia in 1826. Poe joined the Army in 1927. Despite living in poverty for many years Poe was still able to become a very successful poet, writer, and critic. His highpoint in his career was in 1845 when he published “The Raven”.

Poe never knew his parents. At the young age of three, his father left the family and his mother passed away. He was separated from his brother and sister and was sent to live with a tobacco merchant and his beloved wife in Richmond Virginia. Their names were John and Frances Valentine Allen. Frances was very relatable to Poe and they became very close. John and Poe usually had a difficult time with agreeing. Lots of his work in writing when he was in the Army was poems. Being in poverty and living in a low budget lifestyle, he was able to aim high without being afraid of hitting rock bottom. After going to the University of Virginia and getting a good education (before he got kicked out), he was prepared to pursuit his desire of becoming a poet and writer. John Valentine Allen certainly helped Poe even though it might not have seemed that way all the time. John was a good friend of Poe's although they did get in many fights, and at the end of his life, John left Poe out of his will and gave all of his belongings to a son of John's that Poe never knew about. John payed for Poe’s scholarship and pushed him to do well
