Edgar Allen Poe was a poet, author & editor. He was a well known American author of non-fiction and mystery & was the first American to try to live on a writing career. He changed the way people view writing and made an extraordinary breakthrough in English literature. He accomplished great things in his lifetime, but had to battle through many life changing obstacles which influenced his famous writings. Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Baltimore. Soon after he was born, Edgar’s mother divorced his father & left with Edgar and his siblings. When he was 2, his mother passed away and became an orphan. He was then adopted by John & Frances Allen. As Edgar got older he would constantly argue with his adoptive father John about paying for his secondary education (high school). After finishing his secondary education he attended The University of Virginia but decided to stop attending due to no funds. When he dropped out he decided he’d enlist in the army (1827). His brother passed away in the mix of all this. At this time was when Edgars writing career began. Edgar did very well in the army and kept the title of a sergeant major. As Poe kept his determination to become a writer, he soon accomplished getting a job as an editor for a news paper. As a result of this Edgar married his cousin Virginia in 1836.
