Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston MA. He went to the University of Virginia and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Poe is known for his amazing talents as a writer and poet. He has a number of thrilling poems. A lot of things occurred in Poe’s life that made him write about the things he did. Poe never knew his birth parents. His dad left early on and his mom passed away when he was 3 years old. Following this Poe went to live with Tobacco merchant, John Allen and his wife in Richmond Virginia. Once Poe moved with John and Frances Allen he grew a bond with Frances but not so much with Allen. Poe and Allen had a lot of disagreements about money. When Poe was in college John didn’t cover all of his costs so Poe resorted to gambling. The result ended in bankrupt causing him to go in debt and return home. After returning home all he had to find was his fiance engaged to someone else. After getting kicked out of military school a year later, Poe focused on his writing. He moved around from New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Richmond just searching for opportunities. From 1831-1835 Poe stayed in Baltimore with his aunt and cousin. He found literary as well as a love interest in his cousin Virginia. They married in 1836 when she was only 13 or 14 years old. In 1835 Poe found a job for a magazine called “The Southern Literary Messenger where he was known as a “cut throat critic” because of his harsh commentaries. Along with this Poe also had some of his own stories in the magazine. The relationship between him and his publication became strained because of his aggressive personality and alcohol problem.
