Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. He was an American writer, critic and editor but was best known for his poems and short stories. At a young age, Edgar grew up to rough circumstances. Poe’s mother was a teenage widow when she married David Poe, and Edgar was their second son. Poe was the son of actors, but his father left his family when he was young and his mom followed to die when he was the age of three. After the death of his mother Poe was separated from his siblings and went to live with John and Frances Allan. There he lived on a tobacco farm which was located in Richmond, Virginia which led him to go to the University of Virginia in 1826. While he was in college he found that he couldn’t fully afford it so he picked gambling and ended up in deep debt.
Poe was an excellent student at West Point, but was expelled due to neglecting his duties, it was thought to be out a spite because John had remarried without telling Poe. After being expelled, Poe continued his writing career full time while living with his aunt and two cousins. He caught a break when one of his short stories won a contest in Baltimore Saturday Visitor and had a job at Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond.
