Week 9 Article Review and Comparison

In the first article I chose to review, texting, reading and other social activities are not seen as literate activities by teachers who state that “students are just not reading and writing anymore.” (Irvin, Meltzer, Dukes 2017) It asks what skills that students use outside of school might help build a foundation for completing reading and writing assignments in school. I think that this can be associated with focusing on autonomous learning using choices made by the students. (McCombs) If students can feel they are responsible for their learning they are much more likely to complete requested work.

This concept is demonstrated effectively while giving us insight into why the respective authors view the information the way they do. The most influencing of the two I felt was “Developing Responsible and Autonomous Learners: A Key to Motivating Students” I was most inspired by the story about a school observation the author participated in. It was interesting to see her take on differing teaching styles. I found the last teachers concept of class structure to be of great interest. I have noticed in my own instance of homeschooling that by setting forth my assignment schedule, the children knew what was expected of them on any given day and that by allowing them to complete the assignments in their own order they are more willing to complete the work.
Both articles speak about helping to create autonomy in the classroom and how to combine this with cooperative assertions. In this respect, the first article “Taking Action on Adolescent literacy make some very keen observations on how to foster a new interest and love of learning by incorporating their ideas and experiences in the class. This went along the same lines as the story by McCombs mentioned
