Thousands of people are killed each year because they made the decision to drive under the influence or are hit by someone who did drive under the influence. In 2004 the Center for Disease Control reported that more than a third of traffic-related deaths in the United States or 16,694 deaths were from alcohol-related vehicle crashes(Gale 1). The punishment for killing someone in a car accident in the United States as of 2023 is 15 years in prison and a lifetime long revocation of your driver's license. The punishment for drunk driving under the influence and killing someone is minute for the damage done.
