The Butler started with the scene of Negro lynching with Martin Luther King’s quotation: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quotation alluded Cecil’s attitude of mind toward harsh reality. In 1926, African Americans received subhuman treatment. Adult Cecil had an opportunity to work in the hotel as a butler. Later Cecil had the luck to settle in Washington D.C. where the lesser racist state in the United States. He served eight presidents in the White House. The job, butler, was a clear example of expressing African American’s submission to the white; they had to not only pretend that they did not hear anything but also pretend that they did not see anything.
