Presidential election brings a lot of attention to candidates running for the office and public is listening and watching every move they are making. Public is also analyzing their thought process. News and media is analyzing their moves and trying to break it down for public. This year’s presidential election is nothing less and candidates have been under fire. The Gary Johnson Campaign has been trying to represent itself as the better option than the “lesser of two evils choice.” In order for this to work Johnson has been using appeal to logos as his primary appeal to voters. The intended effect is for voters to see that Johnson is using facts and data to backup his claims instead of the Clinton-Trump approach of appeal to pathos. Almost all of Gary Johnson’s arguments have appeal to logos somewhere in them. This approach takes much more time to accomplish because of the amount of fact-checking that has to be done.
Based on the political debate, I’ve learned many things about the Democratic-Republicans and the Federalists. For example, the Democratic-Republicans believed that having an economy that was based upon agriculture and farming was the best way to succeed. They thought that most citizens were good, and that there should be a more state-centered government so that the people can generally rule themselves. Democratic-Republicans thought that if the constitution didn’t specify something, you can’t read between the lines and make up what you want to do. They also believed that they should help France in the war against England because in the American Revolution, France had helped them.

Rhetorical appeal has three forms: logos, pathos, and ethos, and each of them are meant to persuade an audience. As written in "An Overview of Rhetoric," "Rhetorical discourse if usually intended to influence an audience to accept an idea..." Pathos, logos, and ethos are quite common in everyday life, from books to speeches and commercials. Logos makes the audience think logically about the argument presented. Ethos makes the audience think about his or her morals and ethics, and pathos influences an audience's feelings.
Effectively, Reagan utilizes rhetorical devices in his speech to powerfully convince the leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the rest of Eastern Europe to open up the Berlin Wall barrier which separated East and West Berlin! For example, Reagan states, “But in the West today, we see a free world that has achieved a level of prosperity and well-being unprecedented in all human history. In the Communist world, we see failure, technology backwardness, declining standards of health, even want of the most basic kind-too little food.” This is quote demonstrates logos because the author presented facts about how successful the Democratic world is in contrast to the unsuccessful East side. The fact that the Communist world has failure, technology backwardness, decreasing standards of health, and even a minimal food supply, shows how by taking down the wall, freedom can solve these issues and lead to prosperity for the Communist world.
The third proof that is apparent from the start of Obama's speech is pathos. Obama uses several instances of pathos to persuade his audience by appealing to their emotions (ethospathoslogos.com). As mentioned previously, Obama starts his speech off with a bible verse scripture. He utilizes oraculum which is the “quoting of God's words or commandments” (lanham). After this scripture he remembers the children who lost their lives by saying, “we gather here in memory of twenty beautiful children and six remarkable adults.
