Elias Howe invented the first working sewing machine. He was born on July 9, 1819 and grew up in Spencer, Massachusetts. He went to his district school in the winter and helped at his father’s mill and did other simple farm jobs while he was not at school. Howe also worked at a factory making cotton machinery in Lowell, Massachusetts for two years. He first heard about the idea of a sewing machine while he was working in an inventor’s shop in 1839 and a conversation took place where a man was asked why he was bothering with a knitting machine,
