When talking about people who resisted the status quo or resisted social conformity, you have to talk about transcendentalism. Transcendentalists were people who believed in knowledge of the world that goes beyond the idea of the five senses. They believed that people would make the right choices. The person I chose that resisted the status quo, like the transcendentalists is Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She was an amazing women. She fought for women’s rights and also fought against slavery. She also wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, which called for women’s equality and rights. Stanton had a lot of the same major beliefs as transcendentalists. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born on the 12th of November of 1815 in Johnstown, New York. Her father was a lawyer who favored his son, which made her want to excel in what was considered for only males. Stanton was quickly drawn to the women’s rights movements. She married Henry Stanton and actually omitted the word ‘obey’ in the vows. Together they had seven children. Both believed in the idea of men and women being equal. “They took progressive stands on women's rights, abolition, reform, and education. “Stanton shared the beliefs that slavery was wrong and people are equal. “ A TRANSCENDENTALIST is a person who accepts these ideas not as religious beliefs but as a way of understanding life relationships.” Another similarity between the two is they both weren’t religious. Stanton believed that the bible was holding women back and that is was saying that women were not equal. Transcendentalists did not agree with religious ideas and felt that people should be in unity.
