Today, in Literature for Children we go into our literature circles and talked about the book that our teacher gave us to read. My group ended up getting the book The Sign Of The Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. In this literature circle my role was the connector. I had to connect the story to my own past experiences, happenings at school or in the community, stories in the news, similar events at other times or places, other people or problems that you are reminded of or between this book and other writings. I picked to do the one that sounded the easiest to me, so I ended up doing my own past experiences. I came up with three different examples that I connected with this book. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. In the beginning of this book you have a father and a son who live in a cabin in the woods. They left the mom and other siblings behind, until they got a good house build. Matt is the little boy in the story and he gets left to live by himself until the father gets back with the family. The father tells the Matt to put seven notches on seven sticks and by the time Matt runs out of sticks his father should be back with the rest of the family. Matt lives alone for quite a while, before he meets the Indians that live by. Matt got himself into some trouble collecting honey. There were a couple of Indians that were watching Matt, Attean and his grandfather saved Matts life. Matt and Attean became really close friends throughout the story. Attean teaches Matt a lot of life skills. Attean and his tribe end up moving towards the end of the book and Matts family still hasn’t come back yet, so he has to decide if he’s going to stay or go with Attean. Matt ends up staying and his family does finally come at the end of the book. The most interesting discussion that we had in our group was how much Matt grew up going through this whole book. In the beginning, he kind of acts like a little kid and is scared that he’s left alone. As you get deeper into the book you kind of forget how old Matt really is.
