What really is the purpose of probation? Many people look down on probation and say that it is the easy way out of a criminal’s punishment. In some cases because of probation the criminal is allowed a lot of freedom and it may seem like they aren’t getting punished for their crimes one bit, but it is not that simple. People on probation have to follow a strict set of rules. Also, they probation officer can actually drug test the criminal on probation any time they want to, as well they can search the criminals house and belongings any time. Probation is not jail but it does have many befits. By far the most amount of people put on probation for drug charges. Yes, other people are still put on probation for other crimes other than drug crimes. For example, say a person was charged with possession of heroin, instead of this person being locked away in jail he could be put on probation but with requirements. He will have to complete/attend rehab; this will be beneficial to him because he can get off the drugs and become a better person. Now, if he does not complete those specific requirements and he just continues to shoot up on heroin, then he will get his original punishment. Rehabilitation it being looking at as the most important way of dealing with an offender right not; and less focus of punishments and locking people away in jail. The most important part of rehabilitating an offender is that the offender him/herself has to want to change. One way probation does this is, that use it as a scare tactic. For example say a juvenile acts up and is charges get off with probation, this individual might have the mind set not that he got off lucky and probably shouldn’t continue what he was doing. The offender hast to change if not they will go to jail and that constant mindset deters most individuals. As well, since probations has many restrictions on what the individual can and cannot do, this make the offender realize that if they continue doing what they are doing they will go to jail and have even more restrictions. Probation for most people is almost like a wakeup call or a second chance; shocking the individual into changing for the better.
