A huge factor in how people behave has to do with the way they view the world. People respond to the world in different ways because they see the world in different lights. And a huge influence on the way people see the world is the society that the individuals were raised in. The society one grows up in instills values and ideals into its citizens through its culture and code of conduct. This logic explains many different behaviors in different creatures. In Story of Your Life, there is a huge difference between the way that humans and the heptapods view this world. This causes a problem when the two species come together and attempt to interact. The Time Machine is set far in the future and humankind has divided into two distinct species. One species is the Eloi, the lovely, meek race that dwells above ground. Eloi are the race that resulted from the upper class in our society today. Their world is a paradise, which has resulted in their changed form. “Where violence comes but rarely and off-spring are secure, there is less necessity - indeed there is no necessity - for and efficient family, and the specialization of the sexes with reference to their children’s needs disappear.” (Wells 25). Because the Eloi lead such a perfect and coddled life, they have no need to be sharp witted or strong, and thus have become diminutive and dull compared to the humans they descended from. They live in open huts, surrounded by the ruins of their intelligent life. Now that there is no danger, they have become complacent. They no longer read or write and speak a basic language. They do not strive for anything; perfectly content to live in fear of those they once subjugated; the Morlocks. The Morlocks were once the lower, working class of the society. However, they were driven from the surface by the upper class, forming a society of their own. “Evidently, I thought, this tendency had increased till Industry had gradually lost its birthright to the sky….Even know, does not an East-end worker live in such artificial conditions as practically to be cut off from the natural surface of the earth?” (Wells 41). The Eloi and the Morlocks and the Eloi were one the same race, but the Eloi drove the Morlocks under the Earth, where they adapted to their surrounding. However, Morlocks still have the machinery to operate, and thus have retained some level of intelligence. Living below ground has warped their forms into one that can barely be recognized as descended from humans. The Morlocks and the Eloi have become so different because of the way they
