Emerging issues in the field of Geriatrics
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Gerontology as “the comprehensive multidisciplinary study of aging and older adults”. In other words, Gerontology is a study that focuses on old people and their process of aging. Many get confused between Gerontology and Geriatrics. They are two different streams of science. Gerontology, aside from science also incorporates psychology, sociology and other streams of study. While Geriatrics is strictly the study of diseases and conditions that associate with old age. Geriatrics focuses and teaches us on how to take care of the aged population. When referring to old age most people think of someone more than 60 years of age. But most people don’t need geriatric care until they reach the age of 70 or 75 (Fletcher et al., 2000). There are specific conditions and diseases that come along with age. With the emerging issues with the population there isn’t enough research done to help this population.
