As America starts to get older and wiser so does its baby boomers. In the United States of America, every day for about the next 20 years, over 8,000 baby boomers will turn 65 years old (2U, 2017). In other words, the number of Americans over the age of 65 will double by 2030 (Hayutin, Dietz, & Mitchell, 2010), which will be approximately 20% of the total US Population. These baby boomers have 80% chance of having at least one chronic medical condition and 77% have at least two. These chronic diseases heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes combined causes almost two-thirds of all deaths on a yearly basis (NCOA, 2017). For nurses to be knowledgeable and supportive to care for baby boomer patients 2-3 times older than them, nurses should be trained adequately, so they can better advocate for their patients.

Chronic illnesses cause the cost to rise, and lack of resources to execute the care causes care delivery problems. A number of taxpayers are indirectly proportional to the number of adult population, and with the passage of time, the gap is increasing consistently (Hayutin, Dietz, & Mitchell, 2010).
