And Then There Were None is a murder mystery which every guest on the island is murdered. Before each character dies, they all try to figure out who the criminal is. In the book, Agatha Christie depicts how the human mind will be affected by the amount of stress through the character Emily Brent. Emily Brent is already overly bias about her beliefs, but as she stays on the island longer it causes to be more judgemental. When everyone figures out that Mrs. Rogers dies, Emily was stuck on it being “an act of God.” Even though everyone else thought that she was murdered, she would not give up on her beliefs (Christie 99). The more deaths she witnesses, the more she comes to realize that she has not done everything right. She only acts how she believes Christians should. When the gramophone comes on and everyone starts to confess their crimes, Emily Brent does not speak of her actions. When people look at her and expects her to come out, she says, “I have always acted in accordance with the dictates of my conscience. I have nothing with which to reproach myself. (Christie 72). However, later on she finally tells Vera Claythorne what she had done. Emily’s servant, Beatrice Taylor, got pregnant before she was married, so Emily kicked her out of her house and took everything away from her. Because of this, Beatrice killed herself. Emily said this, “Her action-her sin…” (Christie 110-111). At first, Mrs. Brent thinks that she had never acted in a manner that would cause shame. She thinks her actions are always perfect, and no one does it better. However, she realizes that she technically does act wrongly, but it follows her beliefs.
