Thesis statement:
Emotional abuse, which is the most common form of abuse among the elderly can result from lack of attention, lack of affection or neglect and can result in new antisocial or destructive behaviors in the elderly person.
Methodology used:
The article “Emotional Abuse among the Elderly: Affecting Behavior Variables” was an interview with older adults who were contacted by their counselor. The social workers chose older adults who were treated for emotional abuse to be interviewed.

In some states such as Cook country, Illinois the incidence of emotional and physical abuse of the elderly tripled. An older adult experiencing emotional abuse has difficulty understanding why he/she is getting abused. The family or professionals might see behaviors such as biting and antisocial or destructive behaviors. The older adult could also begin new habits such as sucking and biting behaviors. Some older adults who have been the victims of emotional abuse form a strong emotional relationship with their animals such as pet dogs, cats or fish because they are filling the space of emptiness that they feel. In the article it is suggested that older adults who are being abused should contact social agencies, clinics, hospitals, or doctor’s offices where they can receive professional help and care.
