Emotions are like an infection in the play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. An infection that spreads to the purest of characters and the most vile ones. Shakespeare writes beautiful and well-thought-out scenes about questioning people’s emotions and how irrational people can be the cause of chaos. Emotions run high throughout the play and envy, anger and devotion to love lead the characters to act irrationally and go against their better judgment.
Jealousy is an amazing example to start off the chaos inflicted by this emotion. To begin, envy runs rampant in Helena’s mind and clouds her priorities. To start, Titania ‘falls in love’ with Bottom and that causes his friends to think he disappeared. Titania groans, “What angel wakes me from my flowering bed?” (3.1.118) Titania. With the love curse still in Titania’s eyes, she falls for Bottom. With Titania trapping him for such a long time, It leads to Bottom’s friends mourning him and actually thinking he got lost or died. Next, Lysander, just like Titania, ‘falls in love’ with Helena and it ruins Helena’s sparse confidence. Lysander having a revelation says, “Not Hermia but Helena I love” (2.2.113) Lysander. Lysander’s thinking leads to Helena thinking he is mocking her and she thinks she is the butt of a gigantic joke. She screams and yells at him which results in her running away with Lysander running after her. Finally, in the last scene of the play, the reader is shown the lengths to which a fictional story’s characters, Pyramus and Thisby, will go to be with each other with the excuse of love. The craftsmen star in the play shown for the lovers’ wedding celebration and it was frequently shown back in the day because it resembles undying love. Pyramus and Thisby were so clouded by their emotions for each other that they thought they could unite with each other in death. They did not take a step back to evaluate the situation and it results in them killing themselves. Shakespeare writes about the dangers of love and following your heart rather than your
