Job opportunities in the game development industry in recent years has been scarce, Several AAA developers which use to call brisbane home have now shut their doors, from 2005-2011 a total of seven high-profile video game studios shut down (Miller, 2011). Indie developers now dominate the Australian game development scene however studio's most of the time simply can't employ developers, whether that be financial struggle or just not needed. As a damaging result the talented and bright workforce within Brisbane now turn to international companies seeking work. Mr Stark stated “It is virtually impossible to find video game jobs in Australia”, going on to also say “about 90 per cent of local developers move overseas when a studio shuts and only …show more content…
Our internet infrastructure is therefore critical to maximising the Australian industry’s viability and export opportunities although as Trent Kusters told abc news "Because we're in Australia and the internet isn't really at 21st century standards, it really is a drain on productivity." (Brennan, 2016). Antony Reed chief executive within Game Developers’ Association of Australia (GDAA) also backs this up stating “broadband speeds are hampering the sector – and gamers too” (Lightning Broadband, 2016). Reed also suggested “It could well be we’ll end up in a place where Australians can’t participate in the kind of entertainment content we’re creating for the rest of the world” (Lightning Broadband, 2016). Australia ranks 50th in the world for average internet speed with 9.6Mbps, lagging behind even developing countries such as Thailand at 36th and Kenya at 43rd (Jenkin, 2017). More than 23% of Australians still suffer a connection speed less than 4Mbps. This makes it extremely difficult for Brisbane based developers to work with others remotely. The restrictions on where studios can be setup with sufficient internet has pushed larger studios into limited options for office space, which impacts the cost of doing business. In order for Brisbane to become a more productive and proactive within the game development scene a solution to its network infrastructure needs to be
